Outdoor Space Picks

It’s summertime. In Atlanta, that means sunshine, barbecue, baseball and the occasional sunburn if you’re not careful. We’re fortunate to have mild winters so with some thoughtful planing, we’ll help you set up an outdoor space that works for the summer and well into the fall!

When I look for outdoor furniture and decor, I always try to keep three things in mind:

  • Durability: If it’s meant to live outside, it needs to be durable. Look for weatherproof fabrics, rust-resistant materials and hardy design. Outdoor furniture can take a beating and will need to be replaced more often than indoor furniture, but if you look for durable materials, you can maximize the length of these purchases.

  • Versatility: Outdoor spaces often shift to meet the needs of the event. Picnic tables for kids’ birthday parties can be dressed up for cocktail parties and a poof can be used as seating or a footrest depending on your event’s vibe. Look for pieces that can serve multiple uses to get the best bang for your buck.

  • Simplicity: The beauty of being outdoors is the natural environment. These spaces do not need too much furniture or too many accessories since you are surrounded by lush grass, green trees and beautiful flowers. Use colorful vases and pots to incorporate more of those natural elements into your outdoor room design.

If you’re looking to refresh your outdoor space, I wanted to share a sample client presentation to help you get started. This particular design includes a dining area, screened in porch and under the deck space for the kids!

I designed this space with outdoor entertaining in mind. The blue & white color combination gives a classic vibe while the touches of natural wood and greenery make it fit in any backyard.

Multiple seating options creates a versatile space that works for a dinner party, drinks or even s’mores. The outdoor rug creates a sense of a ‘room’ while the coffee tables and bar cart give lots of places for your guests to set food and drinks. Again, the color palette makes it flow from indoor to outdoor.

Who doesn’t love to swing outside! This particular space has a nook under the deck that is ideal for children. These hanging swings feel youthful and fun while still fitting the aesthetic. And I love the pop of yellow on the picnic table. This is definitely a space I’d love to host in!

If you’re just looking for a new piece or two, I’m loving these styles for the season.

Outdoor Rugs

The best way to define a space is with an outdoor rug. These patterns hold up well to the elements and immediately create a more intimate vibe for your seating or dining area. Look for weatherproof materials and natural colors so you won’t notice rain marks.

Fun Umbrella

Whimsical design doesn’t have to be expensive. I adore this turquoise cabana stripe umbrella from Target’s Threshold collection. At $100, it’s a cute piece that can tie a space together. Pair with with turquoise and cream accents with plenty of fresh cut flowers and greenery and you’re on your way to a beautiful outdoor space.

Colorful Pillows

The quickest way to make an outdoor patio feel polished is with pillows. These will help your guests feel more comfortable while bringing in pops of color. I love these embroidered pillows from Target that work great indoors or outdoors. Store them inside and bring them out for events to extend their life significantly.

With a few thoughtful pieces and fun colors, you’ll create an outdoor space for summer cookouts through fall fires.
